The 34 Day War

The 2006 Lebanon war began on July 12 following a Hezbollah cross-border raid that resulted in the death and abduction of Israeli soldiers. Hezbollah demanded the release of Lebanese prisoners in exchange for the soldiers. Israel responded with airstrikes targeting both military sites and civilian infrastructure, as well as an air and naval blockade; Hezbollah launched rockets into northern Israel. During the 34-day conflict, approximately 1,200 Lebanese and 165 Israelis were killed. Hundreds of thousands of people were displaced; in Lebanon, a third of the population was forced to flee. A ceasefire was brokered by the UN and went into effect on August 14.
